Hair loss

It is a common, yet little-mentioned problem for both men and women: hair loss. Head hair loss can be experienced as very annoying and can even reduce your confidence. The causes of hair loss are diverse. Age is usually the cause of hair loss, but there are huge differences between people. In principle, it is a natural phenomenon that says nothing about your further health and lifestyle. And just as important: it is treatable. We have already helped hundreds of people who suffer from hair loss to get a good result. You can also benefit from this treatment.

When do we speak of hair loss?

It is normal to lose around 100 hairs a day. Hair grows in a cycle: growth phase, hair loss, resting phase and new growth phase. So don’t worry if you find some hair on your pillow in the morning. We only speak of hair loss when the hair becomes visible and thinner.

Causes hair loss

Many people are ashamed of hair loss and mistakenly assume that they themselves were the cause or could have done something about it. However, the cause of hair loss rarely lies with you. In almost all cases, hair loss is a natural process that happens with some people sooner than with others. No less than 57% of men and 27% of women say they suffer from hair loss. For both men and women between 20 and 29 years of age, the hair loss starts at the front of the skull. As we get older, the hair loss gets worse and worse. But how does hair loss occur?

Alopecia Androgenetics: hereditary hair loss

It is one of the most common causes of hair loss: Alopecia Androgenetica. This genetic disorder causes the hair to fall out, making it increasingly thinner and thinner. At some point the hair becomes so thin that the scalp becomes visible. With hereditary determined baldness (androgenetic alopecia), DHT plays the leading role. This substance is produced in the hair root pouch by conversion of the male hormone testosterone. The DHT can bind to the androgen receptors of the hair root pouch. This blocks the absorption of nutrients, so that the hair root follicle produces less hair and eventually dies. The hairs in the hair ring do not have this disposition. These continue to grow and this creates the typical pattern of male pattern baldness.

Nutrient and vitamin deficiency

Hair growth requires nutrients such as proteins, moisture and minerals. With a normal eating pattern you will get more than enough. Only in extreme cases, such as anorexia, a nutrient deficiency can cause hair loss. With regard to vitamins, you should pay particular attention to vitamin B. A deficiency of B5, B8 and B12 is explicitly associated with hair loss. With starting hair loss you can try whether a vitamin B complex helps.

Iron deficiency

To ensure that your body functions properly, you need to get enough nutrients. If your body doesn’t get enough iron, hair loss can occur. Eat enough fish, meat and dark green leafy vegetables to meet your iron needs.

It is perhaps an obvious cause of hair loss: stress. During a stressful period, your body produces stress hormones that have a negative effect on the hair follicles. The hair follicles can become inflamed by the hormones, causing the hair to fall out. Cortisol is released in the body under stress. This hormone prepares the body for explosive actions, such as fleeing and fighting. A natural reaction that helps you when you are under pressure. But with constant stress, the increased amount of cortisol leads to a change in the entire hormone level. You produce more testosterone, which results in more DHT in the hair follicles. This makes the hair fall out. This type of hair loss is often temporary. Hair growth will recover automatically when the stressful period is over. If you have a genetic predisposition to baldness, stress can accelerate the balder.

Drugs such as birth control pills, antidepressants or beta-blockers can cause hair loss as a side effect. Do you use medication? Check the package leaflet whether one of the side effects is hair loss. If this is the case, you can ask your doctor to prescribe other medicines.

Bad condition of the scalp

To ensure that your hair stays healthy, it is important to take good care of your scalp. For example, a poorly perfused scalp will cause your hair to fall out. Give yourself a head massage regularly to stimulate the blood circulation in the skin.

A malfunctioning thyroid gland

If the thyroid gland is not working properly, too many or too few hormones are produced by the body. The hair falls out due to the shortage or excess of hormones. You recognize a malfunctioning thyroid gland due to fatigue, depression and brittle hair and nails.

Despite the fact that hair loss is determined by genes or hormones, you can delay the process by getting enough vitamins and minerals. In addition, it is important to examine your daily rituals. For example, did you not shower too hot? We give you 6 tips to prevent hair loss.

Avoid hair dryers, hair straighteners and curling irons

Styling devices such as a hair dryer, straightener or curling iron make your locks defenseless. The heat from the devices affects the hair, causing it to “break”. This damage to your hair cannot be repaired. Therefore, always use a product that protects your hair from heat when using one of the above devices.

Use mild hair products

When using daily hair products, it is important to use mild products to prevent your hair follicles from clogging. You recognize aggressive hair products by ingredients such as sulfates and silicones. With us you can purchase natural shampoos, lotions and vitamins to reduce future hair loss.

Shower not too hot

No matter how tempting it is; showering too hot is fatal for your hair and skin. A hot shower removes the natural oils in the hair, causing your strands to dry out. In addition, the hair roots are damaged and hairs break down faster when the shower is too hot. It is recommended to shower with a water temperature of approximately 38 degrees. Then rinse your hair with cold water so that the hair scales close.

Tight hairstyles

It is a common hairstyle: tightly tied hairs in a ponytail, braid or bun. Although it is functional and looks nice, it is not good for your hair. Because the hairs are tied tightly, the chance of the hair breaking off is greater.

Shampoos for hair loss

On the shelves of the drugstore or pharmacy there are plenty of shampoos aimed at men who suffer from hair loss. This contains substances that have to do with hair growth, such as vitamin A, beta-carotene, B5, B8 and E. However, these nutrients and vitamins are very difficult to penetrate the skin from the outside. That is really only possible with very high doses, which are only available with a prescription.

What can you do about baldness?
